I sewed my first @sewyourview project, the maraMcCalls
I am over the moon to share this project with you! I’ve been wanting to partake in a Sew Your View challenge for a few months now, but never found quite the right time. Coming to the conclusion that there rarely is ever the right time to do anything in life. I made the decision to commit to this challenge after #thelittlereddressproject21. Here is my review to inspire you through your sewing journey.
A closer look at McCalls M8037
The Mara pattern was first released for the fall season in 2020. I purchased this pattern in spring of 2021, with hopes to make a summer dress. Clearly, that worked out, do you feel the sarcasm yet? You can find M8037 in two size options 6-14 and 14-22. It features a killer cleavage candy, a massive plunging tie front neckline for Views A & B (floor-length skirt) with a high center front slit. View C has a draped neckline and is designed with an evening-length train hemline.
The dress is also designed for Knits with moderate stretch, jersey, velvet, and pretty much any fabric that can provide at least 30% stretch across the grain.
Lets Talk Choosen Fabric
I enjoy shopping at Joann’s fabric for sewing notions and patterns, occasionally for everyday wear fabric. This year, I found 2 really amazing fabrics and will consider checking them first for quick makes project. This is Glitter Stretch Black and Gold Knit Fabric [https://bit.ly/3sR6zdv] was the best choice. It sheds glitter like nobody’s business but is beautiful nonetheless. However be aware that the glitters are just glued on, so I plan to was by hand and lay on a drying rack.

Perfect Pattern and Fabric Pairing
If you want a pattern that looks like you’ve lost a lot of sleep sewing it, then this is it. The instructions are very good as is the illustration. It came together nicely and fits me perfectly without any modification to the pattern.
I’ve seen lots of people make this pattern and they all sew it up as is. Since I finished two long dresses for December, I wanted to switch things up. On this pattern, I’ve swapped out the straight sleeve and used Tilly & The Buttons Billie balloon sleeve. My dress was cut at a size 12 and I added the Size 4 sleeve of the Billie. Additionally, I’ve shorten the dress to keep it sexy, and cocktail-ready. Especially since I made the neckline more modest than the pattern had intended.
Great for confident beginners
This is definitely a good pattern if you want to start dipping your toes into more serious projects. It has some nice intermediate features, that will grow your sewing skills. I’m really impressed with the step-by-step instructions. They have done a good job with the presentation. It’s a good pattern to buy as well, with the multiple views, you can make a great number of pieces for your wardrobe.
I do hope this project makes a nice splash on the Sew Your View page, I think it turned it amazing and unique from the other submission.
