Pattern Review McCalls M6988 Version C: Exposed Zipper Dress

Color Block and Exposed Zipper

I’ve become a fan of color blocking and exposed zippers. This is my first attempt at the exposed zipper and it was a success (thanks Professor Pincushion for the tutorial ).  I will not use the hem tape again. Using hem tape for this project let a weird gluey residue that needed scraping off. I will investigate a temporary glue of some sort for the future.

Pattern Description: Semi-fitted dresses have self-lined yokes, princess seams, and back zipper. A and B: flounce and narrow hem. B: front overlay. B and C: below elbow sleeves. D: short sleeves. Separate pattern pieces are included for cup sizes A/B, C, D.

Pattern Sizing: A5 (6-14) E5 (14-22) My dress was cut at a size 12 due to my shoulder measurements,

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes

Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?  Although I’ve not made the flounce for this dress, it’s the reason I purchased the pattern .

Fabric Used:   Ponte Skin Royal and Black Fabric & Ponte Scuba Skin Black and Black Polyester Fabric This blue fabric has a good texture and a forgiving stretch. It feels soft on the skin and warm, which is great for this time of year. The only drawback is it snags a bit. I plan to get the red version of this fabric as it’s on sale for Thanksgiving. Look for it in a future post.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: An additional 3.5 inches was added to the sleeves.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? Yes, definitely. I’m very excited to play with the design lines of this pattern for Spring 2015

Conclusion: This is a great pattern if you are new to sewing and consider yourself to be an intermediate to advanced beginning sewer. I love this pattern because I did not have to do any alterations and it fit straight out the packaging. The instructions are clear, even for an ambitious new sewer. Highly recommended!

Thanks for visiting and Happy Sewing!

Looks great! I'm nervous, though! Just cut out this pattern last night and cut an 8! I see that you cut a 12. Maybe I cut it too small!! 🙁

    Hi Jessica,
Best of luck with the dress, you'll do just fine. I think you are safe if you follow the finished size chart when choosing a pattern. Let me know how it turns out and post a pic on my Facebook page.
    Have a great day!
